Interpreting the Old Testament

Course Summary

This course provides a book-by-book survey of the Old Testament. It focuses on tracing the development of significant theological themes (particularly the establishment of Yahweh’s kingdom on earth), discerning the overarching message of each book and how the books fit together within the larger canon, exploring the various literary genres found in the Old Testament, and assessing the significance of the Old Testament for the ongoing life of the church today.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Trace theological themes through the Old Testament.
  2. Describe how the Old Testament reveals Yahweh’s plan to establish his kingdom on earth.
  3. Read biblical books with attention to their overarching message and contribution to the larger canon.
  4. Explain how attention to literary genre affects our understanding of a biblical book or text.
  5. Discuss how the Old Testament is significant for the ongoing life of the church.
